Acupuncture Trigger Points

Acupuncture Trigger PointsAcupuncture trigger points are tight bands in muscles that cause pain. A trigger point can be tender when touched. This term can also refer to the pain felt around the muscle or some other part of the body when the trigger point is tapped.

A good example is QL or quadratus lumborum muscle. This muscle is frequently involved in lower back pain; however it remains often overlooked as the cause because of its pain transfer pattern. The QL muscle is found above the hips; however its trigger points can instigate pain in the sacral area or deep within the buttocks.

Acupuncture Trigger Points: Development of Trigger Points

Acupuncture trigger points develop as you live life. Repetitive strain due to working in front of a computer each day or prolonged sitting or engaging in sports or mopping the floor or moving boxes or playing an instrument or walking the dog or carrying heavy items can cause the development of trigger points.

Stress can also cause trigger points to develop. Most people adjust to stress through holding and tensing their muscles in their own unique ways. For example, singers can develop trigger points along the jaws in the masseter muscles or along the neck in the trapezius muscle. It is also possible for a singer to develop trigger points in the muscles of the abdomen. Trigger point development mainly depends on your muscular holding patterns based on your emotions or physique.

Acupuncture Trigger Points: Trigger Point Acupuncture Sessions

Acupuncture trigger point sessions involve the use of needling techniques in releasing tight bands present in the muscles. This method of alternative treatment integrates Eastern concepts of meridians and qi with Western concepts of fascial and muscular constrictions that lead to distinct patterns of pain. Muscle and fascia constrictions indicate obstructions in the flow of qi along the meridians or energy pathways. The qi obstructions cause pain. If viewed from a Western context, qi can be seen as combinations of lymphatic drainage, blood circulation, and nerve conduction.

In this context, myofascial pain can be addressed as a whole. Therefore, it can have extensive effects on your physical and mental wellbeing. As tight muscles start to relax, you might be able to feel cramping sensations. The cramping sensation often lasts quite briefly, most of the time for only a second or so. After this, you can generally feel quite relaxed, enabling you to enjoy a short nap while you are on the table.

Acupuncture Trigger Points: Preventing the Reactivation of Trigger Points

Acupuncture trigger points sessions can be quite effective in relieving pain. However, there are other things you can do to keep you from reactivating trigger points. A proper and regular stretching routine can already help. Other approaches you might also want to try involve looking into your sleeping positions and overall posture. If you are able to identify areas of concern, address them right away. You might also want to check if changes need to be made on your workstation.

You might also want to consider making adjustments in your movements as you engage in physical activities. It is also important for you to manage stress well. You might want to try practicing meditation and other mindfulness exercises to help lessen stress and to prompt your muscles to relax and loosen up.
